The Big Radio Show in my Mind

The other day i was listening to Triple J as my good mate "Wavey Gravey" and i were fanging around to check if the were any cresters folding nicely near the shore. We have all heard what my fellow hellman thinks about the old 98.9 (in our area anyway), as he has constantly written off their tendency to jump on all sorts of musical band wagon and even coined the the term Triple Gay, which must have taken a plethora of creativity to come up with. Often i have found myself standing up for the station as they give some young music dudes opportunities they would struggle to find otherwise. However as i heard wave after wave of shitty Aussie hiphop and the pretentious and completely lame dribbling of Sam Simmons, some dude who stinks so frigging hard but still claims to be a professional comedian.

This got me nodding in agreeance with the Triple Gay sentiment and i soon found my mind wandering, contemplating when triple J just stopped being as enjoyable as it once was.
I was instantly filled with nostalgia as i remembered instances of fanging down the coast in the early hours of the morniCheck Spellingng, hearing Myf Warhursts cute laugh before she went skits on TV and smashed on some pounds, but most of all the radio inside my mind continually played the witty banter and sense of air wave based camaraderie that morning show hosts Adam Spencer and Will Anderson Brought into my little life.

From 2000 to 2004 Adam and Will woke up each and every morning and filled countless lives with goodtimes to listen to when you were putting on your face in the morning.
I searched a few message boards and realised that many young adults, say in their mid to early 20;s, felt exactly the same as i do. for five years these two funny dudes ruled the radio dial each morning, with record rating that no show from Triple J is yet to match.

In many ways their dynamic was a match made in some sort of sexless heaven. Adam Spencer was and is a mathematical genius, and his quick mind lent itself beautifully to hilarious pieces of topical information and out of control impromptu comments. At the time the show ended i was studying or my HSC and loved it when Adam smashed some unsuspecting victim with a joke in the form of a maths equation (it helped this is the only time in my life i would have understood it).

Will was a little different. A stand up comedian at heart he was more of the traditional type of radio host, but had a little less poise and didn't mind losing his mind over his own jokes at any opportunity. Fittingly they actually tied the knot on national radio in a legally sanctioned commitment ceremony.

However everyone knows that its not the typical back and forth of a radio duo that makes the show, but the stunts and weekly features that keep you tuning in hoping you aint missed that weeks episode of Shannon from cockatoo (a wonderfully frank and honest punk from western NSW who gave us weekly insights into his life and even asked out his sea crows crush on national radio, what a hellman). One particular feature that i hated to miss was known as Gay School. After Play School hit the headlines of sensationalist current affairs programmes for portraying a young chicky with two lesbian mummys, Adam and Will employed an ex playschool dude to read some ridiculously inappropriate story featuring a kindergarten ages protagonist who was often engaging in all sorts of sex and drug related activity. Another segment i dug was when each Friday when they had a pop artist in to interview they asked them to create a spontaneous song that described the weather around the country from that particular day, with results ranging from the utterly absurd to the almost inspired.

On the 26th 0f November 2004 the dudes decided to go their separate ways and their final show was one of those events you couldn't miss, with even our lame English teacher letting us listen during first period so no one would miss it. That's how rad these dudes were. I scoured the net trying to find some pod casts but all i could find was some photo evidence of the dudes from their final show, which was aired infront of a packed house at the manning bar in Sydney. If any of you skits wads know where to find something i would be forever in your debt x
