Remember that really lame song with the acoustic guitar, church bells and the annoying vocalist singing lines such as "A killer in me, is a killer in you", "What I choose is my choice", that was all over depressing mixtapes, on boogieboarding videos and made every single person (well not everyone, probably just me) want to kill themselves?
Yeah that song somehow made it onto the Pumpkins second and only decent album "Siamese Dream".
Back then in 1993 Pumpkins front dude Billy Corgan actually had hair, was nursing a mad case of depression and had everyone calling his band "the next Nirvana" (I swear every alternative rock band that broke into the mainstream in the early 90s was labelled this).
The hellman pretty much went insane after becoming a psychotic perfectionist in the studio ala My Bloody Valentines Kevin Sheilds and put immense pressure on the thin ice the band itself was already skating on.
When the record was finally done, Corgan, with the aid of producer Butch Vig produced one of the best albums of the 90s. The finished product contained a mixture of the Pumpkins signature alt rock, quasi metal, Cocteau Twins influenced Dream Pop and Shoegaze thanks to Corgans obsession with "Loveless".
Below is a video of them playing my personal favourite track off the album, "Geek USA" in front of about 100,000 crazy Germans. Billy looks like he has racked about a gram of coke (check him absolutely shredding around the 3 minute mark with James Iha struggling to keep time), D'arcy actually looks hot on the bass in a sort of "you can tell I'm a Heroin addict" kind of way and Jimmy Chamberlin steals the show with some of the best drumming ever even though he had probably shot up a truckload of junk before hand.
Ahhhh if only these dudes were still this cool.......
