Little men fighting over babes. It is a story as old as time itself and has been powerful enough to destroy empires, as Helena of Troy can attest to. I think it is safe to say that it has been the catalyst for nearly as many neg spirals as Dragon's semi final losses and one man who knows more about productive negging than most is Jesse Lacey, front man of Neg Pop super group, Brand New.
It comes as no surprise then, that Brand New smashed out a glorious song entitled Seventy Times 7 on their debut album that documented a massive neg spiral that was brought on when one of Jesse's best mates smooched his babe in the bathroom at a local house party. The Songs title is heavy enough as it draws its inspiration from the bible when Jesus advises one his his apostle hellman, Peter, that if one of his Bro's sinned against him he needed to forgive him seventy times seven and is therefore aligned with a plethora of biblical connotations. The song beautifully meanders along to power chords and regales the story of betrayal before reaching a glorious crescendo of angst driven vocals, with the lines,
Is that what you call tact?
You're as subtle as a brick in the small of my back
So let's end this call and end this conversation
And is that what you call a getaway?
Tell me what you got away with
Cause you left the frays from the ties you severed
when you say "best friends" means friends forever
Is that what you call a getaway?!!
Tell me what you got away with!!
Cause I've seen more spine on jellyfish!!
I've seen more guts on eleven-year-old kids!!
Have another drink and drive yourself home!!
I hope there's ice on all the roads!!
And you can think of me when you forget your seatbelt
then when your head goes through the windshield!!
The aspect of this song that makes it particularly crazy is that is directed towards Lacey's former band mate and Taking Back Sunday shralper John Nolan. John Penned a rebuttal to the aforementioned track in the form of Taking Back Sundays No "I" in Team. Nolan's perception of the whole incident is demonstrably different as the opening lines antagonise Lacey by sating "He Can't Regret, why can't you just forget it" and building up to the poignant "best friends means you pull the trigger, best friends mean you get what you deserve". Sounds as crazy as a fight between Dixon and Dobbo on a Friday night outside the harp.
Check the two opposing clips.
